SCSU President Gregory Tomso Joins Foundation Board
Dr. Gregory Tomso, who became St. Cloud State University’s 26th president in early January, has been appointed to the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.
“We are thrilled to welcome Gregory Tomso to our distinguished Board of Trustees,” said Brian Voerding, Initiative Foundation president. “St. Cloud State University is a vital partner in our region, and we are excited to strengthen that relationship through Tomso’s leadership. He brings a deep commitment to community collaboration and workforce development that aligns closely with our mission.”
Tomso strongly believes in the connection between higher education and community vitality. He expressed appreciation for the Foundation’s work and its commitment to St. Cloud State University and the broader region.
“I am so impressed with the work of the Initiative Foundation and grateful for their commitment to St. Cloud State University,” Tomso said. “I’m eager to align the University’s efforts with those of the Foundation to strengthen and build the greater St. Cloud community.”
Tomso identified workforce development and attracting workers to the region as critical issues facing Central Minnesota. He is particularly inspired by the relationship between the university and the surrounding community.
“When the community thrives, the university thrives—and when the university thrives, the community thrives,” he said. “These are vital, mutually sustaining relationships, and I am inspired by the many partnerships between the community and the university.”
Originally from Chesapeake, Va., Tomso has lived in several states before making Minnesota home. He enjoys ceramics, gardening, and cooking, and is interested in learning to cross-country ski. He has also been involved with numerous community arts organizations and community gardens.
Tomso now begins his three-year term on the Initiative Foundation Board of Trustees and joins 14 other regional leaders who help shape and guide the Foundation’s mission to empower people throughout Central Minnesota to build a thriving economy, vibrant communities and a lasting culture of generosity.
